The Slater UL tent series derives it's inspiration from the Fly Creek UL series. The Slater is light and fast like the Fly Creek but comes with extra floorspace in the 1+ and 2+ sizes. Whether it's just you or you and your dog, the extra space comes at little cost in this minimalist free standing shelter. Another unique feature to the Slater is its absence of mesh. Big Agnes replaced the mesh walls on the tent body with lightweight breathable nylon rip-stop for that extra bit of warmth and privacy, or just to keep the sand and wind out when you're headed to the desert. I was hesitant about buying this tent, as I couldn't find any reviews. After much researching, and narrowing it down to a few tents, I decided to give this a try. I did find a Youtube video of someone who has the Slater 2 - person, so after watching that,I liked it, and I bought it.I had very specific wants in a backpacking tent that have been hard to find, namely......little or NO mesh, under 2 pounds, free standing, and a single pole system. I have been using a bivy shelter, so small and not much of a vestibule is not an issue for me, but this may bother some.The tent is super light. You could use it without the rain fly in warmer weather, and the door unzips to provide a mesh screen for seeing out. I really like it, and it compares to some of the others I was checking out, like the MSR Nook, etc.It's expensive, but I wish I had spent the extra bucks to buy the two person. I was really try to go light, and didn't want the extra ounces.The material is very thin, so I will make a footprint for it, as I think it will help with wear and tear. They do sell one for this tent.There is some condensation, to be expected with it being fully enclosed, but you can unzip the door and use the mesh screen, with the rain fly on, and this helps with air flow. Again, I am a cold weather backpacker, and this tents fully enclosed design will keep me as warm as the bivy shelter. It's the closet thing I could find for a four season tent, without the weight. I haven't used it in the heat of summer, or in any storms, so I will update. As for me and my search for the perfect tent for years, now......I love it!

one terrific tent!

this tent is really built! first time out we were in a 12-hour downpour--extremely heavy rain. absolutely no leaks, drippage, or any problem at all. everything was extremely well-sealed right out of the box. the ventilation system is also outstanding--4 very large windows, large ceiling vents and the lower vent in the door panel real helps the air flow! generally very easy to set up with 2 people. this is an outstanding tent--very well constructed, easy up and down, tight, waterproof, and practical. we use it for 2 people. 3 or 4 would be really pushing it, in term of interior space, but it's very well suited for 2 adults plus gear. enjoy!

Perfect family camping tent

I have two Sunrise 8 tents by Eureka. I chose Eureka because they are the company that produces two-man tents for the U.S. Armed Forces.The Sunrise 8 is a very well made tent, with quality stitching all around. The floor material is durable and water proof. With 4 large zip windows there is plenty of ventilation options, along with the "Hi/Low" venting on the door. I have found this traditional design of tent with roof peaks on all sides to be very resistant to heavy rain. It will sleep two luxuriously, three comfortably, and four decently. When sleeping four, since it is square, this allows sleeping bag arrangement to be easy, with your travel bag at your feet or your head. The inside height of the tent is pretty tall, so getting dressed in the morning isn't complicated. The zippers are not cheapies, so they glide smoothly and don't get stuck. There is also a mesh organizer included, but I have found I don't use it.Assembly is super simple, easily done by yourself in 10 minutes or faster with a partner. There are two tent rods and two roof rods. You don't even need to pull out the instructions. That's why I like this design. Take down is just as easy, and the air escapes quickly. The storage bag is plenty big and you will not have a problem fitting it into the bag. NOTE: As with any tent, always fold and roll your tent, then put it in the bag... don't just stuff!This tent is more expensive than, say a Coleman of the same size, but you get what you pay for. I would highly recommend this tent to families or individuals that do "state park" style modern camping a few times a year. This durable tent should last a lifetime.Also there is the Sunrise 9, which is 9x9ft in the same design.May 8, 2011 - Both of the tents are still in great shape, zippers fine, no leaks, no tears. After many camping trips they held up very well.

Good Ventilation, Amazing waterproofing

I wanted to withhold reviewing this item until I really was able to test it. The first few times i used it it was sunny 70 degree days, any tent would be great for that.Well, this past weekend provided a test from hell. I had to set up the tent by myself for the first time and it took all of 15 minutes total, if that; very straightforward. The day was incredibly hot and I need an afternoon nap, so I put the ventilation system to the test. The four large windows and the small lower vent really moved the air well. Even with the direct sun it was not much warmer in the tent than outside of it. That night the rain came. Flash floods lightning, and wind. It was quite a storm. The entire camping area was underwater. Two sites down from us the people had water to their doors of their car. Luckily we were uphill from them, but not out of the water. We were in about 2" of water, but the tent didn't leak a drop. It felt like we were on a water bed there was so much water under and around the tent, but it held its own and kept us dry. People were amazed that we had no water, they all swore they were ditching their old tents and buying one of these.All told, this tent is great. Size wise it is great for my family and me, not obnoxiously over-sized and manageable for one person set up, but also big enough inside to stretch out.I wholeheartedly recommend this Eureka Tent.

The two doors each have a mesh window, which is great for ventilation and when it's time to put on the fly, you won't have to worry about losing your fresh air. The fly has additional vents for continued ventilation. ALPS tents each come with a factory sealed fly and floor seams to give you the best weather protection and keep you dry. Love this tent!

I couldnt believe I was going to but a tent (for 1 person) that was more expensive than my pack, and more expensive than my 10 man tent. I dont regret it at all, lots of room to move, and I am a big guy (6ft 1 and 250 lbs) and I had little problems with it. Its totally waterproof as far as I can tell, and I dont have any reason that I can see where it wouldn't be. My wife sprayed it with a hose on high for a few minutes in the backyard and it was totally dry inside. Its super-light and easy to take down and put up. I have slept in both cold and warm temperatures in it and it works great for both, the removable fly gives the illusion of being in just a sleeping bag when you take it off at night. Very easy to climb into, and I just cant say enough asbout this tent. Its fantastic, if you're on the fence about this one, don't be, its great!

Alright! Don't know why that other guy with the 1 star is complaining. Check it- I'm a 6 foot 2- 280 lbs guy. Football in high school sort a guy. Yes it's small- but it's a one man stash! I fit comfortably.This thing can also take a BEATING! It has been through some rough rain and wind! Tie the rainfall down good and it's so low to the ground it's great!Me and my backpack fit inside- yes we have to snuggle to fit- but it's solid.I've used it many times and have never been disappointed.

Don't listen to the other guy who reviewed this product. I'm only reviewing it as 5 stars to balance it out so people don't just pass it up because there is one 1-star review. Just read his review and it's pretty self explanatory about how idiotic it is. The only other things he's reviewed are RECIPE BOOKS and a pair of shoes. He obviously doesn't know what a bivy tent is, and if you don't know what it is, go look it up. This tent sounds like a perfect bivy tent, except that it might be a little overpriced. But if you're willing to pay the money go ahead and write an accurate review of this product.

My wife and I spent months researching tents as we are both very experienced adventurers. We own a total of 5 quality tents and the Gunnison 4.1 is by far our most versatile with the best protection from the elements. We are firm believers that you get what you pay for. You will not regret buying this tent! It is quality technology all the way around with a fantastic weight to strength ratio. I am not a paid person that types up reviews for these things. Saw it on here while searching for a Kelty backpack and had to share my review due to its outstanding performance about 6 months ago.We bought the Gunnison 4.1 along with the matching footprint specifically for backpacking and exploring in New Zealand. It held up to everything the Mauri Gods could throw at it, including a Heavy Rainstorm/Flash Flood Advisory that we camped in on Mt. Tongariro. 18 hours of constant rain fell on this tent and we stayed remarkably dry. We even woke up the next morning to the tent standing in 2 inches of water and still not a single drop inside. It almost seemed as if the tent was floating on water. We were amazed and very glad that we made the decision on selecting this tent.The twin doors provided easy access for both of us to enter and exit without climbing over one another. The double vestibules were essential as we could both get out of our wet rain gear and boots without tracking water into the tent. Some may look at this tent and think that it's too heavy for just 2 person use. I however believe a little extra space is worth the additional weight of 1-2 lbs when compared with other lightweight tents. My wife and I enjoy the incredible amount of space we have in this bad boy and can both sit up comfortably in it with plenty of headroom. I'm 6'0 and she's 5'10 by the way. It should even accomodate us well once we have some little adventurers with us someday! :) Kelty did a great job engineering this tent and we will definitely be taking it with us this August on the Appalachian Trail in Maine.

well made tent

i bought this tent along with their 2 man version about a year ago from amazon. 1st, they shipped it quick. the price was very good, and it was an easy process. i have used this tent several times now, which is what i wanted to do before i gave a review. it has held up great. very easy to set up. it packs down small enough to easily carry on my bike when i tour. the main thing i wanted to add was we went to raystown lake in PA a few weeks ago for a week of fun and play on the lake. it rained 4 out of the 5 days we were there. i had it set up for 3 of those days for my nephew to use. it rained over 4 inches in 3 days. the tent never leaked a bit. he was as dry as can be. i also wanted to add, i never put one ounce of seam sealer on it. great tent. get one, you won't be disappointed.

Great Tent

I did a lot of research before buying this tent. I wanted a durable tent that was easy to set up and would keep me and my girlfriend dry. This tent is great. There is plenty of room inside and the tent compacts down pretty nicely- take out the poles and stuff it all in. This tent came with us for a six night trip to Glacier National Park. It hailed, rained, and sleeted, yet we were kept dry the whole time. The only negative I would have to say about it is that the rainfly has to be perfectly centered, otherwise it will not cover the whole tent and water may get in. I wish there were a couple extra inches on each side of the fly. We love the vestibules and the tent is very breezy in warm weather.

It's roomy and has kept us dry.

My wife and I have four tents. For ultralight backpacking, we use the REI Half Dome, for a quick one or two night camp or early season iffy weather, we use the Sierra Designs Alpha 3. For multi-day car camping our standard tent is the Sunrise 11, and for really big campsites that don't have a lot of shade, we use the Copper Canyon 1512. I could fit 5 REI Half Dome tents in that Copper Canyon 1512...it's crazy big. Although that Copper Canyon 1512 is lux, unless you have a wide open meadow, it is really too big for most camp sites. Eureka also makes a Sunrise 8 and 9, but I think the Sunrise 11 is just about the perfect size for car camping in maximum comfort in most established campgrounds. We've had the Sunrise 11 for many years and have spent over 40 nights in it. Overall, I really like the Sunrise 11. Sleeps 6? Maybe, but I prefer just my wife and I in a queen size air bed with plenty of room to move around and for our stuff. We can easily stand up in it. I don't like the room divider, but we just keep that rolled up. A few years ago we camped for 4 days near Taylor Reservoir, Colorado. It rained heavily non-stop, but at least there was no wind. The only water inside the tent was at one of the internal mesh storage pockets sewn into the tent wall. I thought I had seam sealed the tent pretty well, but must have missed this one spot. Luckily, my oversight only resulted in about a 3 tablespoon puddle each day. YOU MUST SEAM SEAL ALL TENTS, use a ground tarp and replace the cheap tent pegs while you're at it. Also, store it in a cool dry place, not out in the garage where it gets hot. This isn't a four season tent, but I've been surprised at how well it has held up to some mean weather. My wife has so far stayed warm and dry, and that's what allows me to stay out there longer. The Sunrise 11 is well ventilated even with the rainfly on. I'll choose less warm and airy over hefty-bag like condensation and suffocation any day. I think the primary selling point for me were the dimensions of this tent. Most developed campgrounds will have a 12 x 12 ft tent pad. I bought the Sunrise 11 because it will fit our big air bed and gear inside and still maximize the setup on a typical campground tent pad. Tent pads are square so I like square floor tents instead of hex. Setup is significantly easier with two people, but can be accomplished solo with minor swearing. Getting the rainfly on solo takes a little more ingenuity. Lay it out upwind, stake it down to keep it from flying away, insert poles, attach a rope and standing on the opposite side of the tent, pull it over. I'm not thrilled by pole sleeves because they hang up on the pole ferrules, but these aren't full sleeves, only at the very top. You clip the rest of it. Overall, I think this is a well made, stable, large, rain shedding tent that has served me well. UPDATE June 2009: We camped in high winds for 3 days at the Oasis near Great Sand Dunes National Park. I tied everything down and we had no problems. The tent is still going strong, but it barely fit between the trees. You never really know if a big tent will fit, but so far I've been able to squeeze this Sunrise 11 in. Its been really close a few times. (If I'm unsure, that Alpha 3 is light enough to bring as a backup). If you go a little smaller in size, like a 9x9, then it will easily fit any place I've ever car camped. For a 9x9, I would go with the Eureka Grand Manan 9 over the Sunrise 9. I like the part vertical walls, the rainfly offers more coverage and it is a more subtle color. (nothing against blue.) I'll give that one a try when my Sunrise 11 dies. This is why I have so many tents. UPDATE July 2009: We camped for 3 days at Lone Rock (#7) near Deckers, CO. I wanted to set up the Copper Canyon 1512, but it wouldn't fit. I also brought the Sunrise and Alpha because there was room in the truck. I probably should have gone with the Alpha, but chose the Sunrise. We had heavy rain, high winds, and even a little hail. The railroad tie and gravel tent pad only served to keep the rain from draining off. At one point we had about 2 inches of water under this tent. The floor felt like a water bed, but only about a 1/4 cup of water blew through a pin hole in one corner. No big deal. Impressive considering the amount of rain and water under the tent. This Sunrise has been great. UPDATE Sept 2012: My Sunrise 11 is still going strong even though I almost killed it. Summer 2011, really high winds tore out a corner pin/strap and one of the top pole sleeves ripped. It was my fault for not setting the guy lines. I sent it to Eureka and they returned it to me repaired as good as new... no charge! Eureka rocks! We used it 5 more days this past summer. The floor is still in great shape, but we're careful to protect it. It looks like it will be some time before I get that Grand Manan 9. We also spent labor day weekend in the Copper Canyon 1512. It was difficult to set up in the breeze, but friends were jealous of our Bedouin-esque palace. These BFTs are super comfortable, but the wind will rip them up if you aren't careful. Be sure to always set out all the guy lines.

good shelter

I've had this tent for over 10 years and it has seen plenty of camping. It is well ventilated with good seams. We've slept is it during hellacious rain storms with high winds, lightning and buckets of rain and it is has performed admirably. Be sure to seal the seams every year as you would any tent. We usually camp in the woods so it hasn't had much uv exposure, but we still use this... I'd buy another... At 7 foot center, you can stand and stretch in it. Our family is only three, me, my wife, our son and our flat coat retriever... plenty of room to play cards etc in rain storms...****** 2010 addendum: Well, we bought this same model again. My son and his friends have taken over our old sunrise, it still holds up.. you have to follow careful habits, like using a good ground cloth and sealing the seams (as already mentioned) My wife and I are able to have the luxury of full sized cots with excellent foam mattresses.. Great Tent.Highly recommended.

Good 3-season tent

The tent is very spacious and airy. That may be the reason it can be colder than some of the tents which are smaller and not as well ventilated. A word of caution - make sure it is well staked down or the shape makes it take off like a sail. We went camping in Yellowstone this summer and the wind blew it around as we were putting it up. Also, the size can make it harder to find a good camping site.
