Product Description

The Extreme is a free standing aluminum pole tent, with a configuration that is extremely strong and sturdy. The 3-pole design gives you more "framework" to combat Mother Nature when she decides to send you a little stronger storm than normal. Assembly is easy with pole clips that quickly snap over the tent poles. The polyester fly and floor are urethane coated, with factory sealed seams for maximum weatherproofness. A door on each side of the tent makes getting in and out of the tent easy. You also get two large vestibules that you can use for extra gear storage. The vestibules also serve as automatic guy-out points when the weather gets a little nasty. The fly buckles to the tent, offering a much more secure attachment when compared to elastic cord. Extra large #8 zippers on the doors and vestibules add to the durability. Mesh roof vents increase ventilation and improve star gazing. Materials: Fly: 75D, 185T, Poly Taffeta, 1500mm Multi-pass Urethane coating, Floor: 75D, 185T, Poly Taffeta, 3000mm Multi-pass Urethane coating, Walls: 75D, 185T, Poly Taffeta, Mesh: Nylon No See-um Mesh, 40D, Frame: 8.5mm 7000-series aluminum. Includes Rain fly, 7000 Series Aluminum Poles, Pole Bag, Stake Bag, 6061 Aluminum Stakes, Guy Rope, Repair Swatches, Gear Loft, Mesh Storage Pockets, and Tent Bag with Drawstring.

5Exceeded expectations--very impressed
By Andrew J. Riemer
These words are from a life-long Eureka fan: The Extreme 3 is the first ALPS Mountaineering tent I've ever purchased, and it won't be the last.[Disclosure: I paid a few extra dollars to get the "Outfitter" model that comes with a heavier floor. I want to get as much life out of this tent as is possible, and know I tend to camp where there tends to be a fair amount of rock under the tent. The models are identical except for the different floor material, and possibly the color of the guy lines.]When I finally convinced my wife to come along with me on a trip to the Boundary Waters, I knew we'd need a good tent. It had been some years since I last had a Eureka Timberline (which I've also reviewed, giving it five stars as well), and I must admit that getting another one was my preference. I've read much about ALPS lately, and have talked to many Scouts and Scout leaders who use them (typically the Merimac) for their troop camping, so I convinced myself to wait on the Timberline and to look at ALPS.Having camped in strong winds on more than one occasion, I was drawn to the Extreme 3's design from the start--the low to the ground fly, and the three-pole frame. I could see how the tent should handle the wind, and the customer reviews I found online verified my intuition. That fly and design make this a great tent for anyone prone to be out in strong winds. So far, it's taken everything thrown at it, including some impressive straight-line winds in norther Minnesota. The rain fly coverage is even better than that of my loved Eureka Timberlines--it covers all the way to the ground, all the way around, and creates two vestibules for gear, one on each side (by the dual entry doors). Falling and blowing moisture had no way to pelt the tent walls themselves. It took some time to get used to opening and closing the fly, but having the vestibules for gear more than makes up for the hassle and really lets it be a three person setup. As much as I've been around (and being one of larger frame), however, I found it much more comfortable as a two-person setup. I typically prefer a bit more room, in case we get rained in a day or two.Setting up the tent is a bit different, if you're used to dome-style tents. The two ends of each primary pole peg on the same side of the tent rather than at opposite corners. The third pole crosses over both of them. The clips make attaching the tent to the poles a snap (literally), and after the initial setup, I've been able to get it up quite quickly. In warm weather, the amount of mesh make it a wonderful fair-weather shelter without the fly, giving you a lot of ventilation and visibility. With the fly in place, however, your only outside view is through two small vent windows--one on each end--unless you keep the fly doors unzipped and rolled up. That's one of the few negatives I saw in this tent--I'm much more accustomed to those Timerline tents with their full front door screen and large rear window. With how well the rain fly kept us dry, however, I'll trade the view for dry feet and gear any day of the week.My only initial disappointment (one that was soon overcome) was that the tent does not have a tub floor (a floor that comes up onto the wall before there are any seams, so that no seams are at ground level). I've long touted tub floors as superior to any design with seams, but since the fabric on the lowest portion of the wall matched the floor, I did not notice the seam until we had the tent in use. To my surprise, the tent kept us completely dry, even though we experiened significant rain and wet ground. ALPS does boast about how they factory seal their seams, and I currently have no reason to doubt them. Of course, that excellent to-the-ground rain fly probably helped a lot, too.Because of the way the fly is used to create dual vestibules, the Extreme 3 takes up quite a bit of space (compared to a comparable Timberline or dome tent). This can present a bit of a challenge if camping in rocky areas, as you need to place those stakes over a broad area. I strongly recommend picking up the Extreme 3 floor saver from ALPS, or using something else as a drop cloth under the tent, just to protect your investment. When used for two adults, the interior is roomy enough for card games and for dressing, though it's not tall enough at the center for standing. Mesh pockets are near each door, and a detachable gear loft is included. ALPS really paid attention to the details, and they've produced one excellent tent! I'm very pleased with the workmanship and materials, and strongly recommend the Extreme 3.

Great tent. It's really just for 2 persons, although 3 could possibly fit - it would be very crowded. The tent went up easy enough. I would have liked better directions. I figured it out, and when it was set up, and I was inside the tent - why, there was the directions sewn into the inside! Weird! And those directions were not very clear to me. The poles worked fine, however when I broke it down the middle pole sections are slightly bent. I'm hoping that it's no big deal, and will not affect the tent - wont know until I put it up again. Zippers all worked good, and it's a nice tent for two, as I've stated. Sorta heavy to use "backpacking", so I'm stapping it to the bottom of my external frame pack. I sorta wish I would have went lighter...as in "Mountain Hardware" tent.

5This is a great tent.
By Bruce Bryant
I'm really happy with this tent and don't think I could have made a better choice other than getting the Outfitter model with heavier floor material. I purchased it for a motorcycle trip through the Rockies and back through the Black Hills after I realized my old tent had finally given up the ghost and was unrepairable. I did a lot of research before making my choice considering Eureka, Marmot, Mountain Hardware and several other brands. Like most reviewers will tell you it's a little heavy for back packing, and you'll probably need to split the load between 2 people. However, it packs small and was easy to carry on the bike. It is truly a 2 adult person tent. You might get a 3rd person in it if they are small, but it will be very tight. The floor protector foot print is an absolute must, or else use a tarp. Be warned the floor protector is also light fabric and developed 2 small holes on the first trip. Police your camp site well before settin it up. A heavier material would have been a better option, but it did it's job and protected the tent floor from damage. I experienced a wide variety of weather on it's maiden trip and was extemely pleased. I was concerned like most people about the factory sealed floor seam, but had no problem during a heavy thunder storm with high winds. Other peoples tents collapsed, but the Alps took it all and kept me warm & dry. The rain fly is great but the zippers are a little difficult to reach. I'll live with that trade off for the awesome vestibule/gear storage area. Pitching it the first time is a little difficult because of the pole design, but I had been forewarned about the instruction sheet and looked hard at the picture on line. Pitching it a couple of times before leaving on the trip made all the difference. It's actually very easy and quick to set up once you're familiar with it. Overall this a great car/motorcycle camping tent awesome for 2 people not for 3.
